A Live-Saving Heart Surgery and Gastrointestinal Disorder Treatments

A Hole in the Heart & GI Disorders

LAURA OMOBUDE was born on January 16, 2017 and lives in Benin City, Nigeria. For the past 2 years, Laura has been going through one pain or the other. At age one, she started having recurrent respiratory track infections. Upon clinical evaluation by the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), she was diagnosed with sub-aortic ventricular septal defect (VSD) -- a hole in the heart -- "measuring 7.9 mm and shunting left to right on echocardiography", according to the medical report.

Laura has since been on anti-failure medications.

At 19 months of age, Laura was diagnosed with oesophageal varices and corporal erosions, for which she has been put on suspension propanolol and suspension omeprazole.

Cardiothoracic Surgery Needed

These deficiencies have affected her in so many other ways. For example, virtually all her mates are in school while she is at home and unable to go to school or live a normal life.

Laura, who is currently being managed by Department of Child Health, UBTH, has been referred by UBTH for further treatment. After researching and evaluating various hospitals and costs, Laura was originally scheduled for Cardiothoracic Surgery on May 30, 2019 at the Heart Center of Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, USA.  Unfortunately, this appointment was cancelled due to our inability to raise the required treatment cost. Nationwide Children's Hospital will reschedule Laura's appointment upon a payment of $60,000 out of the estimated cost of $63,000. As of July 13, 2019, we have been able to raise about $ 8,000 (gross).

Cost of Treatments

At an estimated medical cost of $63,000 (broken down below), Nationwide Children's Hospital has the least medical fees of all the hospitals we contacted, the most expensive being $412,157.37.

  • VSD -- Surgical Repair -- $55,000.00
  • Gastrointestinal Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (GI EGD) -- $8,000.00
  • We estimate incidental expenses at $7,000.00, making an estimated total $70,000.00.

Laura's uncle, Mohammed Ibrahim (same mother as Laura's father), has accepted to be the custodian of this fund. Mr. Ibrahim, a Certified Public Accountant (Illinois, USA) and an Associate Chartered Accountant (Nigeria), will manage all disbursements and the ensure they are judiciously used for the intended purpose. At the end of Laura's treatment, Mr. Ibrahim will also provide a financial report of the fund.

May God reward you as you give!

Thank you,
